Electron affinity

Electron  afffinity:

                             First electron affinity :
                                                                   Energy needed to be supplied or removed when a mole of uni-negative ions are formed in the gaseous state by gaining a mole of electrons by a mole  of  atom in the gaseous state
                                                                  


                    Second electron affinity :
                                                                   Energy needed to be supplied when  a mole of  di - negative ions are formed in the gaseous state by gaining a mole of electron  by a uni- negative ion in gaseous state .
 Although   first  electron  affinity can be positive or negative ,second electron affinity must be positive.

              Reason : 
                             Addition of an electron in to a negatively charged ion is difficult due to repulsive forces between  two electron cloud.

Basically there are two factors that affects for electron affinity

                                     01. Atomic radius 
                                     02.Electron configuration.

Now let's discuss about how atomic radius effect  for electron affinity 


Arrival of an electron is easy when the atom become small.
So when atomic radius is small arrival of electron is easy.






Electron configuration:
Electron  will be  arrived easily if the ion become stable after arrival  of  the  electron.
